Famvir (Famciclovir) is used to treat herpes zoster (shingles) and genital herpes. Famvir does not cure herpes infections but decreases pain and itching and helps sores to heal, and prevents new ones from forming.

how to take this medication
Famvir comes as a tablet to take by mouth. Famvir usually taken every 8 hours (three times a day) for 7 days to treat shingles. Famvir is most effective if started within the first 48 hours after shingles first appears.

To treat genital herpes Famvir is usually taken twice a day for 5 days. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Famvir treatment should be started at the first sign or symptom of genital herpes. Take Famvir exactly as directed.

Do not take more or less Famvir or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Use Famvir as soon as possible after symptoms appear. Continue to take Famvir even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Famvir without talking to your doctor.

side effects
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Famvir (acetaminophen and phenyltoloxamine) and seek emergency medical attention: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives)

liver damage (yellowing of the skin or eyes, nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort, unusual bleeding or bruising, or severe fatigue)

blood problems (easy or unusual bleeding or bruising); or · low blood sugar (fatigue, increased hunger or thirst, dizziness, or fainting).

Other, less serious side effects of Famvir may be more likely to occur including: dry eyes, nose, and mouth, drowsiness or dizziness, blurred vision, difficulty urinating; or excitation in children. Some patients, especially the elderly, may experience confusion, including delirium and disorientation.

Famvir side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

precautions
Before takingFamvir, Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Famvir, acyclovir (Zovirax), or any other drugs.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially digoxin (Lanoxin), probenecid (Benemid), and vitamins.

Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had kidney or liver disease, problems with your immune system, human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV), or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Famvir, call your doctor.

overdose
In case of Famvir overdose, call your local poison control center. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services.

Do not share Famvir with others.

missed dosage
Take the missed Famvir dose as soon as you remember it, and take any remaining doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed Famvir dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
